Changing the Throttle Cable

- Remove the left and right side covers. The right side is held on by one bolt in the upper front corner, the left side is held on by one bolt in the loser center. Remove the bolts and pull the covers out and free of the mounting tabs.

- Remove the front seat (click here)

- Remove the gas tank by first turning the fuel petcock to "off", then disconnecting the fuel line. Remove the single bolt at the back of the tank, and slide the tank back and free of the mounting braket at the front of the tank.

- Loosen the throttle cable adjuster by backing off the lock nut (click here) and turning the adjuster all the way in.

- Remove the two philips head screws holding the right switch box together (click here)

- Disengage the throttle cable from the throttle sleave (clike here)

- Remove the throttle cable from the right switch box (click here).

- Remove the two bolts holding the tank bracket in place and remove the bracket (click here)

- Remove the screw holding the throttle cable clip to the front air box (click here)

- Oull the throttle joint apart and disconnect the throttle cable from the joint, leaving the two cables going to the carbs alone (click here)

- Tie a peice of twine to the bottom end of the throttle cable and wrap it with electrical tape. Tie the end of the string to the frame. Pull the throttle cable out from the top.

- Untie the string from the old throttle cable, and tie it to the bottom end of the new one. Use the string to pull the new cable through, ensuring that the routing is the same as original. Remove the string.

- Connect the two carb cable ends to the throttle cable joint. Clip the throttle cable connector back together.

- Install the clip back on the front air box.

- Install the tank bracket.

- Install the upper end of the throttle cable into the switch box, and slip the cable end into the throttle sleave. Screw the two halfs of the switch box back together around the handlebar, making sure the tab is in the hole on the bar. Adjust the slack out by screwing the adjuster out until the throttle can only be rotated 1/8 of an inch before it starts to pull on the cable. Tighten the lock nut.

- Install the tank, seats, and side covers.

- SLOWLY test drive the bike and check for correct throttle operation.
