Changing the Throttle Cable
1- Remove the left and right side covers.
The right side is held on by one bolt in
the upper front corner, the left side is
held on by one bolt in the loser center.
Remove the bolts and pull the covers out
and free of the mounting tabs.
2- Remove the front seat (click here)
3- Remove the gas tank by first turning the
fuel petcock to "off", then disconnecting
the fuel line. Remove the single bolt at
the back of the tank, and slide the tank
back and free of the mounting braket at the
front of the tank.
4- Loosen the throttle cable adjuster by
backing off the lock nut (click here) and turning the adjuster all the way in.
5- Remove the two philips head screws holding
the right switch box together (click here)
6- Disengage the throttle cable from the
throttle sleave (clike here)
7- Remove the throttle cable from the right
switch box (click here).
8- Remove the two bolts holding the tank
bracket in place and remove the bracket (click here)
9- Remove the screw holding the throttle
cable clip to the front air box (click here)
10- Oull the throttle joint apart and disconnect
the throttle cable from the joint, leaving
the two cables going to the carbs alone (click
here)
11- Tie a peice of twine to the bottom end
of the throttle cable and wrap it with electrical
tape. Tie the end of the string to the frame.
Pull the throttle cable out from the top.
12- Untie the string from the old throttle
cable, and tie it to the bottom end of the
new one. Use the string to pull the new cable
through, ensuring that the routing is the
same as original. Remove the string.
13- Connect the two carb cable ends to the
throttle cable joint. Clip the throttle cable
connector back together.
14- Install the clip back on the front air
box.
15- Install the tank bracket.
16- Install the upper end of the throttle
cable into the switch box, and slip the cable
end into the throttle sleave. Screw the two
halfs of the switch box back together around
the handlebar, making sure the tab is in
the hole on the bar. Adjust the slack out
by screwing the adjuster out until the throttle
can only be rotated 1/8 of an inch before
it starts to pull on the cable. Tighten the
lock nut.
17- Install the tank, seats, and side covers.
18- SLOWLY test drive the bike and check
for correct throttle operation.
