The UK and US ordered these two dreadnoughts
scrapped in Italy. The Italians hoped to
have this order reversed, so that they might
negotiate the return of these two vessels
when the peace treaty expired in 1952, so
they found a variety of excuses to not get
started. The ships sat at La Spezia until
1951, when the Inter-Allied Control Commission
ordered the ships to be rendered useless.
Two out of three 15" guns in each turret
were crudely cut off, the reduction gears
were damaged beyond repair, and other vital
equipment was destroyed. The Italians gave
up on saving them, and the two ships were
cut up by 1955.
Retained by Italy:
Battleships:
Andrea Doria
Caio Duilio
They were refitted and acted as training
ships, and alternated as fleet flagships.
In 1953 Duilio was laid up, and scrapped

war, but were scrapped.
