Battle Damage, WWII

The British heavy cruiser HMS Exeter after the Battle of the River Plate in December 1939. Exeter, along with the light cruisers HMS Ajax and HMAS Achilles, engaged the German Graf Spee, causing that ship to seek refuge in the neutral port of Montevideo. She was heavily damaged by the German 11.1" shells, being left in near-sinking condition while her consorts pursued the German raider. She is shown here after limping to the Falkland Islands.

The destoyer USS Cassin after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. The vessel was in drydock, and slipped off her keel blocks when the dock was flooded in an attempt to fight the fires caused by the attack. Also in the drydock were the battleship Pennsylvania, and the destroyer Downes, seen to the right of this photo.

The battleship USS California being refloated in March 1942. She has been striped to lighten her.
