A postcard of HMS New Zealand at Vancouver Canada

The HMS New Zealand was paid for by New Zealand, but operated by the Royal Navy
This ship was an Indefatigable Class vessel, built in England at Fairfield
Shipbuilding and Engineering, 1910-1912.
New Zealand paid for this vessel. That nation
was unable to operate such a vessel, so she
was presented to the Royal Navy as a contribution
to Commonwealth Defense Programme.
HMS New Zealand was was with the First Battle Cruiser Squadron
of the Grand Fleet from August 1914 until
January 1915, when she bacame flagship of
the 2d Battle Cruiser Squadron. She fought
at Dogger Bank on January 25, 1915, and targeted
the German armored cruiser Blucher. When HMS Lion went out of action, Rear-Admiral Moore assumed
command of the squadron temporarily.
On 4/22/16 New Zealand was damaged in a collision with her sister
ship HMAS Australia, but was back in action in time for Jutland
on May 31, 1916. She was struck one on her
rear-most turret, but suffered no casualties.
From June 1916 until September 1916 she was
part of the 1st Battle Cruiser Squadron again,
returning to the 2d for the duration of hostilities.
In 1919 HMS New Zealand embarked Admiral Jellicoe on a tour of the
Domminion nations. Listed for disposal under
the Washington Treaty, she was sold and broken
up for scrap at the end of 1922.
