History of the Izmail Class

Four of these vessels were laid down on December 19, 1913. Russian industry was unable to manufacture turbines for these vessels, so the machinery was ordered from Germany. The outbreak of W.W.I. meant that there was little chance that the machinery would be delivered, so the vessels were launched without it. All were launched in mid to late 1915, but without machinery construction could not continue. Once the war ended the dismal state of the post-war and post-revolution Russian economy prevented resumption of work. The incomplete hulls sat for many years, with 3 of the hulks being broken up for scrap in Germany in 1923. The last vessel was broken up in Russia in 1931.
The Izmail class ships were comparable in size, armor protection, and speed to contemporary British and German designs. With 14" guns in four triple turrets, they would appear to have been slightly superior in firepower to other ships of the same vintage, but the poor layout of the main guns resulted in a long citadel and a lack of end-on fire.
